A letter to Her Majesty, Queen of Sweden

Your Majesty Queen of Sweden,

I am a Palestinian who spent the last 13 years of his life trying to promote coexistence and peace through bringing Palestinians and Israelis to meet and dialogue and work together.  I truly and genuinely believed that it is possible and worked as hard as I could to prepare the proper ground for it. I admit I failed.

Your statement about Palestinian kids and their mothers shocked me.  I never imagined that from this distance and due to the complexity of the crisis, where even we living it daily are not able to make sense out of it, you will be able to decide on the party to be blamed, and publicly choose Palestinian mothers as the party responsible.

Your majesty, have you ever lived under foreign occupation?  Have you ever encountered a situation where you have to raise your kids in a war environment?  Did it ever come to your mind that there exists a mother on the face of this earth that is welling to send her kid to die?  Do you think Palestinian mothers are human?

Sorry to ask those hard questions.  I never imagined that anyone including Israelis would reach this level of dehumanizing Palestinian mothers.  Are you concluding that the victimizer in this bloody crisis is finally identified?

I am sure that the sad seen of the huge number of kids killed and wounded urged you to speak.  I am as well sure that you genuinely want this to stop.  Yet to reach the level of blaming the victim, the one who grieves most as responsible is outrageous.

Let me bring your attention to few things.  80% of Palestinians live in an area that is less than 10% of the total area of the West bank.  West bank and Gaza are probably smaller than the smallest county in Sweden.  70% of Palestinians are below 18 years old.  And 55% of the people living in the West Bank and Gaza are refugees (kicked out of their towns and villages by force and living in Refugee camps).  So if you are seeing lots of kids all around you can understand that a kid living with a family of 10 persons or more in a one or two rooms home (sorry, slum) can only be in the streets.

Palestinian kids living in this misery do not have time to play with toys as many have to come back from his school to a working place to help feed his family.  Most of them live in a family that was directly subject to Israeli atrocities. Has a father in jail, a wounded brother, or a shoot dead cousin. Unfortunately and sadly our kids reaches manhood and maturity while your kids are still enjoying their childhood.

It is sadder that our kids are part of a nation that still lives under occupation and obliged to fight for its independence and human and civil rights.  Not only that, but they are daily bombarded with the ugly scene of blood and atrocities through TV screens.  How can you imagine them being non-allied or controllable under such circumstances?  If you want to look for who is responsible you do not need to hit hard against the poor mothers who do their best to protect their kids.  You can blame us all for not being able to provide them with the peaceful environment to grow up as little cheerful kids.  Yet I am amazed that you still cannot see the ones that point the gun and shoot the kids direct in the head.  The one who in one bullet, aimed well, manage to silence the little souls once and forever.

With due respect,
Ghassan Andoni
