Can Perez help Barak to climb down the tree?

By:

PCR Exc. Dir

Since the start of the recent crisis in Palestine, Mr. Barak was obsessed with the Arafat conspiracy theorem. Either he genuinely believed it or he might have invented it as propaganda excuse and at the end believed it. In either case it represents a common mentality in Israel. Even when Israel attacks it is actually!! Defending. Even when Israel expands it is actually!! Shrinking. Even when Israel places Palestinians under a strict siege it is actually!! Besieged by Palestinians.

Mr. Barak found no difficulty in convincing himself and most Israelis that the current Palestinian Intifada was fully prepared and totally controlled by Arafat. He never allowed himself to even think that his in-human policy towards Palestinians, the brutality of his soldiers, the religious provocation he shared in planning and executing, and his unprecedented settlement building and land expropriation campaigns has anything to do with it.

He faced no difficulty in viewing Palestinians as primitives moved and incited by Arafat. Could never imagine that Palestinians, like all others including Israelis, and as patient as they stood during the difficult seven years of the peace negotiations can become less tolerant and explode in rage and anger. He never managed to ask himself the following simple question: how would the Israeli public behave if placed under total siege, 150 of them were shot by gun fire, and thousands were injured?. He only need to look at what happened in the past few weeks to be able to answer.

In the last meeting between Perez and Arafat, Perez managed to understand and admit what all other Israeli politicians could not. He understood clearly that even if both parties, the Palestinian authority and the current Israeli government, are genuinely interested in ending violence and returning back to the peace negotiations it has to happen gradually and to be preceded by many Israeli acts that indicates Israeli willingness to end it aggression against Palestinians.

This is where Perez succeeded while all others failed. That was the only possible way to get Barak to climb down the tree. He has to admit responsibility towards the hundreds who were killed, the thousands injured, the homes destroyed, and the kids who were either killed or terrified.

For us all to be able to go back to the negotiations table we can never by-pass the blood of the innocent victims. Therefore I demand from the Palestinian Authority not to accept any return to the table before a thorough investigation in each and every incident takes place, before identifying responsible individuals and leaders in each case, and before getting sure that Palestinian blood can never in the future be shed in a similar way.
