Military Generals can never be Peacemakers

By:
Ghassan Andoni

Mr. Barak is finding noticeable difficulties in replacing his military uniform with a civil one. It is interesting to watch how he handles both the peace negotiations and his domestic political problems with a General mentality. Issuing ultimatums and preparing at the same time an alternative plan characterizes his polices since he came to office.

Firstly he deals with all, his negotiations partners as well as other political parties in Israel as the enemy. The procedure is as follows: design a plan; issue a timely limited ultimatum; Prepare another offensive plan in case of the other party fails to accept your offer and abide to the issued ultimatum; take practical steps to execute the alternative plan in case of a negative response. It is unfortunate for this little General that he failed in all of his attempts and had always either to retreat or convert to the excessive usage of force.

He appears to be bold, determined, and confident of his doings. Yet in reality he is confused, unwise, and can drag the area into a big disaster.

During the Camp David negotiations he submitted a plan as a final deal. Towards Palestinian negotiators he was firm “ Take it or leave it “. At the same time plans for a unilaterally imposed separation were prepared as an alternative.

With his major religious ex-partner in the government “ Shas “ he demanded their support for his political stands, which are very controversial inside Israel, and at the same time prepared the plans for his secular revolution in case the demand is rejected.

In both cases our little general failed. He had to freeze his secular revolution and knee in front of Rabbi Ovadia yousef begging for a safety net for one month. And on the Palestinian side his hectic unbalanced policy led to the current crisis through which he already issued six more ultimatums.

What is bothering the most here is that our little general is the most pragmatic open-minded leader in the Israel arena. If the Israeli society can only produce such leaders chances for peace and coexistence in the Middle East are non-existing. May be it is time now for Israel to examine wither military generals, who dominated the political arena in Israel since established, should move away and provide a place for politicians and peacemakers to have a go.
